All about procedure
The nasal correction, also called rhinoplasty, is performed when the shape of the nose is unsatisfactory or when medical indications are given. Medical indications may be, for example, the uneven position of the nasal septum, which prevents the proper functions that the nose should perform or you have breathing problems.
The shape of the nose is genetically determined. Sometimes, mechanical damage to the nose occurs as a result of injuries (e.g. fractures of the nasal bone), which causes its permanent deformation and / or disruption in its functioning. In this case, rhinoplasty is primarily used to restore the basic function of the nose. The nose correction procedure may have a different scope and is individually adjusted to the given face shape and other predispositions. The following corrections in the appearance of the nose are most often performed:
- removal of the hump (ridge of the nose) – this is a fairly common condition, also known as the „eagle” nose. The hump occurs in the upper part of the nose and causes its significant distortion
- plastic surgery of the wings of the nose – most often consists of narrowing (nasal flap reduction or approximation) and re-forming their shape to fit the size of the face
- nose tip correction – belongs to the most complicated part of the nose correction procedure, it involves modeling the cartilage constituting the nasal scaffold
- correction of the nasal septum – restores proper position of the nasal septum
- adaptation of the nose size to the general appearance of the face.
A consultation visit to a doctor – plastic surgeon is necessary for the correction of the shape of the nose. During this visit, the doctor looks closely at the nose, thus checking what the possibilities of surgery are. Not always the correction of the shape of the nose is associated with surgery. In some cases it is possible to make changes in the shape of the nose with the help of fillers, e.g. hyaluronic acid. In this case, the procedure does not require general anesthesia but only local anesthesia and can be performed during a consultation visit. In the case of a large scope of surgery, the doctor during the visit will accurately describe how the nose can be corrected so that the result is satisfactory for the patient.

PREPARING FOR THE TREATMENT
Complete plastic surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Minor corrections of the nose (e.g. wings or tip of the nose) can be performed under local anesthesia or in shallow sedation (short intravenous anesthesia). The main condition for qualification for a full nose correction is good health.
To prepare for surgery under general anesthesia the following tests should be performed:
- blood group
- morphology
- blood coagulation factors (APTT / INR)
- creatinine
- electrolyte level (Na-sodium, K-potassium)
- blood group (standard for procedures under general anesthesia).
An anesthesiological interview is conducted immediately before the procedure and an interview with an anesthesiologist during which the patient can learn all aspects of general anesthesia. About two weeks before surgery, smoking should be stopped – it has a significant impact on the wound healing process. You should also avoid taking medicines that thin the blood, e.g. aspirin. On the day of the operation, do not eat or drink beverages (including water) for a minimum of 6 hours before surgery.
METHODOLOGY OF THE TREATMENT
After completing the medical documentation and after an interview with the anesthesiologist, the patient is prepared for anesthesia (in the case of general anesthesia). Nose correction is performed in two planes – the cartilaginous part of the nose and the bony part of the nose. There are also two methods for the procedure: „open” and „closed.” The difference between them is the type of incisions on the skin under the nostrils, which will not be visible after healing. In both methods of surgery, the cuts are performed intranasally and do not leave visible scars. Depending on the findings, the doctor makes changes in the appearance of the nose until the desired effect is achieved. The procedure of full nose correction usually lasts about 1.5-2 hours. After the procedure, the patient has a plastic dressing (so-called cast) and stays at the clinic for 1 day.
POST-OPERATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS
Surgical correction of the nose is an invasive procedure. Immediately after the procedure, the patient may experience such ailments as: pain, nasal breathing, swelling, discomfort associated with nasal congestion. There may also be signs of a physiological response to the surgery, such as swelling around the eyes, bruising and hematomas around the face, including the cheeks, and watery eyes. These symptoms may persist from few days up to several weeks after the procedure. Ailments related to the appearance of symptoms accompanying rhinoplasty require about 1 week of absence from work. Plastic dressing (cast) is removed after about 7 days, and nasal tampons (setones) after 1-2 days. During the recovery period, you should avoid physical exertion, overheating or cooling of the nose for 3 months. If the operated person wears glasses, they should replace them with contact lenses for a period of 3-4 weeks. The final appearance of the nose is obtained after 6 months, in some cases up to 1 year. This is due to the predisposition of the given organism, e.g. skin thickness and regenerative ability of the body.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR THE TREATMENT
- poor blood test results
- blood coagulation disorders
- unregulated blood pressure
- inflammation of the face
- infections (including herpes)
- diabetes
- pregnancy
